Anna’s Favourites Day 10: Halsey

(H will be another letter with at least one more post, if not two.)

1. What draws me to this particular artist’s music?

There’s this sound to Halsey’s music that I don’t know how else to describe but to use the word grunge, since it makes me think of the texture. I just really love her entire sound because it speaks to my soul in a certain way – the #darkaesthetic part of me that likes dystopia, politics, and exploring the psychology of sin (another reason why I’m finally reading The Brothers Karamazov now). Some of her lyrics are a little questionable, she dresses indecently, and she has a music video I don’t approve of (“Ghost”), but I ignore particular songs and salvage the rest.

Anna’s Favourites Day 9: G

Rather than sticking to one artist as when I have great favourites for a letter, I’m just going to post songs from a singer and band I like (but not as much as others), as well as perhaps a couple singletons. Main two are Gabrielle Aplin and A Great Big World.

1. What draws me to these particular artists’ music?

Gabrielle Aplin has a very lovely voice. While I haven’t listened to her more recent album, I love the soft indie sound of her first, English Rain. As for A Great Big World, I just really like a bunch of their songs – either because they hit me hard because they’re tragically beautiful – or is beautifully tragic?? (like “Say Something”) or because they’re just so happy and cute and make me smile (like “Cheer Up!”).

Anna’s Favourites Day 8: The Fray

fray

  1. What draws me to this particular artist’s music?

I only have two albums of The Fray in my iTunes library, but I love those albums very much. I like their (softer) rock sound and the fact that they have Christian elements in some of their songs. (Also, thank you, Louis Tomlinson for introducing me to this band. *cringes*)

2. Which is my favourite album or EP from this artist?

Probably How to Save a Life, but I also have a soft spot for The Fray.

Anna’s Favourites Day 7: Florence + the Machine

Florence Welch – her voice is beautiful, powerful, and her lyrics go straight to my soul. Sounds like someone Anna would like, eh?

2. Which is my favourite album or EP from this artist?

How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful. There’s just something really haunting about this album that hits me right where the #aesthetic is. The long video series for this album is also #aestheticgoals. Skip some scenes from the first video, and then then you’ve just got utter beauty. The way she sings and puts her entire body into the singing is just amazing. #goals

Anna’s Favourites Day 6: Fall Out Boy

Just for warning, there will be at least two more days with the letter F. (Seems like a lot of my favourite bands start with the letter F.)

Tread carefully now. This is where Anna opens up her heart and talks about the past and gets all poetic.

1. What draws me to this particular artist’s music?

I discovered Fall Out Boy two years ago during the spring, just in time for tragedy to strike in my own life. I’m not going to go into details, but looking in retrospective, I realize how good God is.  This band grew very close to my heart, the songs sometimes being the only comfort I have. I’ve never met Pete Wentz, but from reading his lyrics and closing my eyes and listening to the words, he really knew just how I was feeling. During the worst times, I imagined Pete and Patrick to be two sides of my guardian angel, being my little cheerleaders. You can do this, Anna, they’d say. You can get up and go to class. or I know it’s cold, but you can get off the train and make it to school. It’s okay. You can do this. (Definitely incorporating this into one of my novels.)

While I don’t listen to this band anywhere as much as I used to, they’re still quite close to my heart. I absolute detest the sound of their latest song, but that’s okay. I’ve moved on from Fall Out Boy and they’ve moved on, too. I still like their older music better than their newer, anyway. Those are the songs that will always stay with me.

Anna’s Favourites Day 5: Ed Sheeran

EdSheeran_ATLREC_ArtistHeader1900x700v3

I know, I know. Anna, that’s so mainstream. Ed Sheeran? Seriously? Well, I won’t apologize. 😉 I think he writes excellent love songs as well as some really catchy hits. I like Ed’s voice and his lyrics are great – he’s one of the better song writers of our time, I would go so far to argue. [divide] is probably one of my favourite albums ever. I got just as excited about it as I did about Amber Run’s For a Moment, I Was Lost.

Since I answered my usual first two questions already in that little blurb, let’s go on to question #3, shall we?

3. What is my favourite song from this artist?

“I’m a Mess” … “Don’t” … “Eraser” … “Supermarket Flowers” (*cue ugly sobbing*) … and, of course, “Give Me Love”

Anna’s Favourites Day 4: Dierks Bentley

I still haven’t searched much more into Dierks Bentley’s music yet besides the one album I have, but Black blew. Me. Away. I first discovered Dierks through the title track from this album, and, thankfully, I decided to see how the rest of the album was (best. decision. ever.) Now, if I’m looking for some music to listen to but can’t figure out what, I always revert back to Dierks’ latest album. I’m certainly looking forward to listening to the rest of his music!

1. What draws me to this particular artist’s music?

I’m a country fan, but I like how Dierks’ latest album is more of a country-rock crossover. (The songs I’ve listened to from his past music are all more country, but I still love them.) I like the songs on Black because they’re either super relatable or they have a story to tell. I like his earlier songs because they’re just that kind of feel-good country music I love.

Anna’s Favourites Day 3: Carrie Underwood

I’ve got a bunch of good songs under singers starting with the letter C, but I’m going to have to go with the Queen of Country – Carrie Underwood.

1. What draws me to this particular artist’s music?

Usually, I don’t like women singing country songs, but Carrie is amazing. I love how all her songs (at least the one’s I’ve listened to) have a story to tell.
2. Which is my favourite album or EP from this artist?

I love her new music, especially, but I’m going to go with Some Hearts because I grew up listening to this album.

Anna’s Favourites Day 2: Bleachers

I only have one album from this band, but I really love their music. This is another alternative music choice, of course. 😉

  1. What draws me to this particular artist’s music?

My friend Dru sent me “I Wanna Get Better” probably close to two years ago, as one of her many ways of support. I instantly fell in love with the song, but didn’t listen to the entire album until probably almost a year later. I just really love their unique sound that’s so different from anything else I listen to – and the lyrics, as always.

2. Which is my favourite album or EP from this artist?

I’ve only listened to Strange Desire so far. (I have this stubborn inclination to sometimes, never ever, listen to other albums of an artist, in fear that I won’t like their other music and I’ll feel that I can’t call them a favourite anymore.)

Anna’s Favourites Day 1: Amber Run

Remember how I posted yesterday about the music challenge? Well, I’m starting that today.

Looking through all my music artists in iTunes who start with the letter A, I knew pretty quickly that Amber Run would easily be my favourite out of all of them.

amber-run-740x437

  1. What draws me to this particular artist’s music? Which is my favourite album or EP?

I’m a big fan of alternative music because most pop(ular) music drives me nuts. I’ve always had slightly different tastes that tend to be on the lines of… well, not of the mainstream. Amber Run’s music has a calming effect on me without sending me off to sleep since it still has a beat. I also really love their lyrics – when I first discovered “For A Moment, I Was Lost,” I jumped on it immediately as being an album to which I could relate in its entirety. While that isn’t as true anymore, I still think the album is pretty amazing because the music is great and the lyrics are deep and meaningful.
