My Favourite Music of 2017

This time I’ll actually list something that was released in 2017, since there were a couple albums that I quite enjoyed.

My favourites albums released last year, from least to most favourite (I provide links to the songs I just really really love).

4. Melodrama, Lorde (released in June) — 3.7/5 stars

The younguns of my generation have been looking forward to Lorde’s second album for a long time now, and this album definitely wasn’t a disappointment. “Green Light” starts off the album on an amazing start (I’m also positive it has something to do with The Great Gatsby). My favourites are “Liability” and “Hard Feelings/Loveless” (the first half!!!!), which are the most emotional tracks, in my opinion.

They say, “You’re a little much for me
You’re a liability
You’re a little much for me”
So they pull back, make other plans
I understand, I’m a liability

3. Broken Machine, Nothing But Thieves (released in September) – 4.5/5 stars

I didn’t enjoy this album as much as their first (but then, it was so good it was hard to beat)… but it was still amazing. My favourite songs are “Amsterdam,” “Particles,” and “Reset Me.”

But what if it was simple?
And what if it made sense?
And what if we were living
In a perfect tense?
‘Cause what if you reset me?
What if we restart?
What if you reset me
Before it falls apart?

2. ÷, Ed Sheeran (released in March)

Ed’s other albums have been a little iffy for me, but THIS. ONE. He even got me loving a rappish song (“Eraser”), geeze. I don’t think I could say there’s a single song off the record that I really dislike, from “Shape of You” which always makes me want to dance – to the heartbreakingly beautiful “Supermarket Flowers.” I also just really love the story of “Castle on the Hill.”

I used to think that nothing could be better than touring the world with my songs
I chased the pictured perfect life, I think they painted it wrong
I think that money is the root of evil and fame is hell
Relationships and hearts you fixed, they break as well

1. For A Moment, I Was Lost, Amber Run (released in February)

This album. ❤ ❤ ❤ I just love the emotional lyrics and the peaceful melody of the songs. This album is seriously my aesthetic and I’ve listened to it on repeat ever since it was released. My favourite song at the moment is probably “Island,” but I also just love the first two tracks so much – “Insomniac” (unfortunately, it doesn’t exist on YouTube) and “No Answers.”

You, my friend
Remind me of someone that I used to know
You’ve got his eyes, you’ve got his shadow
When did you become the kind of man to dance at funerals?

Honourable mentions: Trace Adkins, Florida Georgia Line, Imagine Dragons, Brett Eldridge. I’ve listened to a couple songs these guys released this past year, but not their albums in depth yet. Some favourites: “If Only You Were Lonely,” “The Long Way Round,” and “God, Your Mama, and Me.”
